The Boston Area Homeschoolers Queer-Straight Alliance have created a great initiative they’re calling The HEDA Project.
From their website:
“The HEDA Project was founded by the Boston-Area Homeschoolers’ Queer-Straight Alliance (BAHS QSA) in 2016 during the epidemic of LGBT deaths on television. Our goal is to provide a safe, hopeful space for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) youth where they can hear and tell stories about people like them – stories that don’t end in tragedy. Our acronym, HEDA, was inspired by Commander Lexa (also known as Heda Leksa), a lesbian character killed off on The CW’s The 100. The acronym stands for “Happy Endings: Deserved by All”, which is the message we hope to deliver with this project.
These students have worked together to create a space where original stories can be showcased, information about why a project like this is needed, as well as some great book & media lists that promise happy endings for queer characters. There are lists for gay characters, lesbian characters, bisexual characters, transgender characters, & intersex characters. Happy reading!
