Next NSYA and Staff Picks Book Group Meetings

heatwaveOn Thursday February 6 the Staff Picks Book Group will be meeting at 7pm to discuss Instructions for a Heatwave by Maggie O’Farrell. Here’s the description from the library catalog:

It’s the summer of 1976 and London is in the grip of a record-breaking heat wave when Gretta Riordan discovers that her newly retired husband, Robert, has cleaned out his bank account and vanished. Now, Gretta’s three children converge in their mother’s home for the first time in years: Michael Francis, a history teacher whose marriage is failing; Monica, with two stepdaughters who despise her and an ugly secret that has driven a wedge between herself and the little sister she once adored; and Aoife, the youngest of the Riordans, now living in Manhattan, a smart, immensely resourceful young woman who has arranged her entire life to conceal her illiteracy. As the siblings tease out clues about their father’s whereabouts, they navigate rocky pasts and long-held secrets, until at last their search brings them to their ancestral village in Ireland, where the truth of their parents’ lives–and their own–is suddenly revealed.

RealityBoyThe Not-So-Young Adult Book Group will meet on Monday February 10 at 7pm to discuss Reality Boy by A.S. King. Here’s the description:

Gerald Faust knows exactly when he started feeling angry: the day his mother invited a reality television crew into his five-year-old life. Twelve years later, he’s still haunted by his rage-filled youth—which the entire world got to watch from every imaginable angle—and his anger issues have resulted in violent outbursts, zero friends, and clueless adults dumping him in the special education room at school.

Nothing is ever going to change. No one cares that he’s tried to learn to control himself, and the girl he likes has no idea who he really is. Everyone’s just waiting for him to snap…and he’s starting to feel dangerously close to doing just that.

Both book groups will meet in the Robbins Library 4th floor Conference Room. Copies of both books are available now at the circulation desk.
