This Wednesday, December 18, the Staff Picks Book Group will be meeting at the Fox Branch Library at 7pm to discuss Rainbow Rowell’s touching, truthful, wonderful (not that we have an opinion on this) novel, Eleanor & Park. From the publisher: “Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits–smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try.”
And for those who like to mark their calendars well in advance, the first Staff Picks Book Group meeting of 2014 will be Wednesday, January 8 in the Robbins Library Conference Room at 7pm. We will be reading Caitlin Moran’s book, How To Be A Woman, which I like to describe as Lean In meets Bossypants times ten, with lots of British slang and profanity thrown in.
Moran, a funny and fearless British columnist, addresses all kinds of issues that affect women, from fashion to pornography to abortion to pop music. She has set out to reclaim the term “feminism,” and offers this simple test to find out if you’re a feminist: Do you believe that women should be as free as men? How To Be A Woman is by turns side-splitting and serious, and often both at once. All are welcome to come discuss; copies of the book are available at the circulation desks at both Robbins and Fox.
