NEW book club at the library

The librarians of the Arlington libraries are pleased and proud to announce a new “staff picks” book club, starting this fall. The club is open to all, and will meet on Thursdays at 7pm in the Conference Room at Robbins. Our first meeting will be September 20, and we’ll be discussing The Paris Wife by Paula McLain.

The Paris Wife is the story of Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson. The two meet in the States in 1920, marry quickly, and travel to Europe, where they remain for the next several years.

However, the artists’ culture of Jazz Age Paris was at odds with traditional notions of family life. As Hemingway struggles to write a great novel and Hadley tries to fill the role of wife and friend while maintaining her independent spirit, each makes mistakes – and one mistake will ultimately drive them apart.

Like with Titanic, the ending is no mystery, but the story is nonetheless compelling. You can pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk at Robbins starting this week.
